The 2010 Geneva Motor Show this coming March will be the venue for BMW’s third hybrid car. The new model will be a mid-hybrid version of the recently unveiled 2011 BMW 5-Series set to hit the stores this June.

The ActiveHybrid 5 is expected to be inspired by the 2010 BMW ActiveHybrid 7 which is its full size sports sedan on the hybrid luxury class. The 7-Series uses a 3-phase electric motor which is linked to the crankshaft of the car’s V-8 gasoline engine paired with new 8-speed automatic transmission.

The 5-Series will be a mild hybrid. This means that the car will not run relying on the electric engine alone like the 2010 BMW X6 ActiveHybrid. What it will do is utilize the electric motor to restart the gasoline engine after it turns off during stops. The electric motor will also add more torque to help the gasoline engine.

In the 7-Series, the combined output of the electric motor and the gasoline engine is 455 horsepower with a good torque at 516 lb-ft. The bigger ActiveHybrid-7 can zoom from 0 to 60 mph in 4.8 seconds but still it offers a 15% better fuel economy than the powerful 750i.

The announcement of the ActiveHybrid-5 release this March confirms that earlier disclosure of plans of the carmaker. The carmaker sees the potential of the 3-,5-, and 7-Series to become mild hybrids. This opens the possibility of an ActiveHybrid-3 any time soon.

It is not yet clear if the ActiveHybrid-5 will be released along side the 2011 5-Series due for roll out in the US by fall or if it will be marketed as a 2012 model.

Another technology will be launched soon to provide a highly fuel efficient gas engine. This will be good for both the automotives with light-duty and engine markets that are of medium-duty. The technology called HEDGE (High-Efficiency, Dilute Gasoline Engine) II will be launched by the Southwest Research Institute (SwRI) to expand their efforts from the previous one.

With all the ‘go green’ campaign we hear today, this technological progress sounds like a good point to the advocacy. It will eventually benefit all of us through its less-polluting emissions and more economical in terms of fuel requirements.

In the latest test, it showed that the exhaust gas recirculation levels mounted to up to 50%. These are key factors as they develop a knock mitigation strategy that’s more aggressive.

Another element that they’re going to look into is the probably advanced turbocharging system. It will encompass even the testing of the effects of biofuels and hydrogen. This is the additional work that will be done in the coming days to the former HEDGE consortium now on its second phase.

The HEDGE II is not a separate program from the previous one. It is rather a step forward to furthering the cause of the previous one. It’s all for the improvement of technologies and strategies required as modern engines are also on the rise.

Last January 20, this year, a pivotal meeting was conducted along with the HEDGE II consortium.

Another investment on technology would mean improvement in the automobile industry. With high hopes, drivers can look forward to a greener roadway. I also stumbled upon these 12 tips for fuel economy today — check them out, and save on gas and the environment even without one of these engines!
